House of Light

Artist James Turrell is known worldwide as "the artist of light." His artworks take time to experience, time to take in the passage of time and changing shades of light. So in 2000, as part of the First Echigo-Tsumari Triennial art event in Niigata Prefecture near the Japan Sea coast, Turrell designed an inn where one can spend a day and a night enveloped in his world of light and shadow. Architect Daigo Ishii designed the building in Japanese style with tatami-mated rooms, wooden-floored corridors, verandahs, and yukimi-Shoiji, paper doors with cut-out windows for viewing de deep snow for which the Niigata region is known.
